Slumber

O why did you disturb my slumber

as I dreamt of England long ago

Wandering over the hills and dales

to places I used to know.

                   Even in the terraced rows

or farm cottages of peasants low

Still the heart of England beat

                   in my homeland long ago

                   Now I have awakened

to scenes foreign to my sight

How long must I have slumbered

                   not to notice England's plight

                   Awaken I tell my neighbours

can you not hear the drum

                   It tells of England's downfall

                   and our misery to come

How will our children remember us

                   when they are second best

                   Because their parents slumbered

                   giving England to the guests.
