Great St. George

Great St. George, in bygone ages

England called you to her aid;

Chose you for her glorious patron,

In your prayer her trust she laid.

After God and Holy Mary

Yours the name her banners bore;

When her liegemen rode to battle,

You, their captain, went before.

Now, as then, we need your succour,

In the battle for the right.

Lest the hordes of hell should triumph,

Make us victors in this fight.

From the wiles of sin and error

Save the hearts of England’s youth;

Show us how to wield our weapons –

Steadfast courage, love of truth.

Help us fight the powers of darkness,

Drive their legions from our coasts;

Teach us how to win the glory

Of the Almighty Lord of Hosts.

Great St. George, victorious martyr,

Dwelling in the realm of light,

So that we may share your triumph

Come to aid us in the fight.

 Sr. M. Teresa, F.C.

The above verse – written by an English nun in Cornwall, may be sung as a hymn to the tune ‘Ecclesia’.
