Reform Bill
Sir, With regard to the Legislative and Regulatory Reform Bill (letters, 20, 23
and 24) and its potential to allow the Government to change the law of the land,
thus bypassing full parliamentary scrutiny, we should note two other Bills
placed before the House. They are the Company Law Reform Bill and the Government
of Wales Bill. All three Bills curtail the ability of Parliament to fully
debate the issues, propose amendments and ultimately circumvent the full
legislative process.
This is in spite of the politically controversial issues that may arise from
such delegated legislation. To my mind, this portrays the Government’s ongoing
contempt for parliamentary process and the need for proper scrutiny of the
executive, as has been made clear by the Conservative Opposition.
