He flew 485 sorties and shot down 28 enemy planes.

He is a true British hero.

Yet he has been forced to sell his collection of medals to pay for a hip replacement for wife Gwen, 85.

The cash will enable her to avoid a 15-month NHS waiting list.

Surely it can’t be difficult to organise things so that old people don’t have to wait for an op — or sell treasured possessions.

Heroes or not, their generation made Britain. Too often we let them down.
