On November 11, 1921, President Warren G. Harding officiated at the interment ceremonies at the Memorial Amphitheater at Arlington National Cemetery. During the ceremony, the Unknown Soldier was awarded the Victoria Cross by Admiral of the Fleet Lord Beatty, on behalf of King George V of Britain. The Victoria Cross being the highest award for valor issued in Britain, on par with the Medal Of Honor.

In 1966, President Charles DeGaulle removed France from the Nuclear Umbrella of NATO and told the United States to remove all of its soldiers.

"Does that include the dead Americans in military cemeteries as well?" U.S. Secretary of State Dean Rusk reportedly asked.
